Bog oak is a material that cannot be reproduced. With limited supply, demand pushes the price ever higher. But could the price of owning it really be a human life? It turns out, yes. According to certain accounts, bog oak furniture enjoyed special prestige on the banks of the Neva, inside the Winter Palace, where it adorned the throne rooms of the tsar's family. Owning a piece of furniture made from this wood was punishable by death. As the legend goes, only the tsar's family was allowed to possess such pieces.
